This is the most universally available signal, and it suffers chronic underuse by PM candidates. Engineers have known about this trick for years. When a company is hiring a "React Developer" or "DevOps Engineer with AWS experience," those tools are in active use. The specificity in job requirements also tells you about architectural maturity. A posting requiring "experience with distributed tracing (Jaeger/Zipkin)" tells you they have a service mesh. One requiring "Kafka and Flink" tells you they process event streams at scale.
Read job requirements across the entire engineering org, not just your prospective team. Backend, data, platform, and SRE postings reveal layers of the stack missing from frontend-focused listings. Job boards can provide rich insights into a company's internal tooling: if a company is hiring for a "React Developer" or "DevOps Engineer with AWS experience," it's a good signal that those tools are in active use. Validating those signals against technologies that are not externally visible is a reliable way to fill gaps in your picture of the stack.

2. Engineering blog and conference talks
Most scaling-stage companies publish engineering blogs, hosted at engineering.<company>.com, on Medium, or on Substack. These posts are goldmines because engineers write for other engineers, which gives the content a high signal-to-noise ratio. Search the company name alongside terms like "architecture," "migration," "scale," or "incident."
Prioritize conference talks. QCon, Strange Loop, re:Invent, and KubeCon archives are searchable on YouTube and InfoQ. Talks from engineers at companies like Netflix, LinkedIn, Shopify, and Uber have documented how they built and scaled real systems, and more mid-size companies have followed suit. Reading through a few articles in the company engineering blogs for the companies you are interviewing with is recommended preparation before design interviews. The same discipline applies to PM preparation. When an engineering lead at your target company gave a 2023 QCon talk on their Kafka migration, that is not background reading. That is a primary source on their current architecture.

3. LinkedIn team profiling
On LinkedIn and other professional networks, you can search for current employees in engineering roles and look at their listed skills and previous experience. While this requires a bit more manual effort, it can reveal both what tools a company uses and the depth of their investment in those tools. A team of 15 engineers where 12 list Rust is a stronger signal than one engineer listing it on StackShare.
Also look for tenure patterns. A wave of infrastructure engineers hired in 2022 suggests a platform re-architecture happened around that time. A cluster of ML engineers added in 2023 tells you where the company directed its product investment. These hiring patterns generate informed questions about product strategy, not just technology trivia. This method works for every company type, including private, pre-IPO, and enterprise — no need for public repos.

4. StackShare
StackShare is a community where companies voluntarily share their tech stacks, with data on over 1.5 million companies using 7,000+ technologies. Many well-known startups like Airbnb, Uber, and Slack have detailed public stacks showing everything from their database to their monitoring tools. It is self-reported, so treat it as a starting point rather than ground truth, and cross-reference against job postings and LinkedIn for validation.
Companies add their tech stack profiles to open job requirements, so engineers can quickly see the stack that comes with the role. That same transparency works in your favor as a candidate doing research. Coverage is stronger for developer-facing and venture-backed companies; enterprise software companies often suffer from underrepresentation.

5. Wappalyzer and BuiltWith (front-end signals)
These browser extensions reveal front-end and infrastructure signals from the live product in seconds. Wappalyzer instantly reveals the technology stack of any website, including CMS, ecommerce platform, and payment processor. BuiltWith adds historical and market-share context, which is useful for understanding technology trajectory rather than just current state.
For a PM, the value is less about the specific framework and more about its implications. A product still running on a monolithic Rails stack signals different constraints than one on Next.js with a headless CMS. A Stripe integration versus a custom payments layer is a relevant detail if you are interviewing for a fintech-adjacent role. These tools cover the surface layer well but entirely miss backend architecture, data infrastructure, and internal tooling. Use them to validate what you already believe from deeper sources.

6. GitHub and open source repositories (bonus signal)
Not every company publishes public repositories, and most keep their code out of public view. But when they do — particularly developer-facing companies, infrastructure vendors, and companies with active open-source programs — GitHub delivers the highest-fidelity stack signal of any source. Search github.com/<companyname> or query GitHub's organization search and look for language composition in each repo, dependencies in package.json, requirements.txt, go.mod, or Gemfile, and infrastructure-as-code files like Terraform configs, Kubernetes YAML, and Dockerfiles that reveal cloud provider and deployment architecture.
A Dockerfile referencing AWS ECR confirms they are on AWS. A k8s/ directory with Istio service mesh configs tells you they run microservices at some maturity. Use StackShare and any public GitHub repos the company has to identify which languages and libraries are in use. When public repos exist, they are worth prioritizing, but treat this as a bonus layer on top of the universal methods above, not a starting point.

Putting it together
The goal is to walk in with two or three sharp, specific questions that reveal genuine homework, not a memorized tech glossary. Engineers and PMs on the panel will spot the difference in seconds. Generic questions signal generic candidates. Specific, informed questions signal someone who already thinks like a member of the team.
Run through this sequence before any PM interview where technical credibility matters:
1. Job postings across all engineering teams (15 min)
2. Engineering blog and conference talk search (20 min)
3. LinkedIn team profiling for hiring patterns (10 min)
4. StackShare profile cross-reference (10 min)
5. Wappalyzer scan of the live product (5 min)
